The State of Work in America.

    Who Should Pay
There are, as I write this 70,000 workers on strike against three major grocery chains in California. There are places in the midwest, on a smaller scale, where the drama of the fight to preserve health benefits has taken average workers to the streets. There are reports stating that the number of uninsured citizens in this country has climbed to 43 million, of those, 12 million are children.

While this is unquestionably a national crisis, it will not be solved at the bargaining table.

Job creation is on everyone's minds these days. We take three different looks at what is being said about the state of work in America.

Part One: The economy cannot fully recover without job creation. Job creation cannot come from protectionism, a belief that is growing in popularity.

Part Two: The burden of local taxes, health and welfare, and the wages that won't increase all play a roll in the recovery that won't fully develop.

Part Three: Unfortunately, many businesses need to forecast growth beyond the upcoming quarter. Many are unwilling to do that understanding the long term destructive nature of current policies.

    Avoiding Being Kicked When Down
Many years ago while the site was still in its infancy, I wrote an article about disability insurance. In fact, those early readers will tell you that it was a compelling reason for starting this site. Combined with a large void in the education about investing (that was not attached to a product) and my curiosity, the search for disability insurance actually led me to a career as a writer.

What I found out then startled me. And still does. The Social Security Administration is a harsh administrator when it comes to doling out funds for the truly disabled.

    Understanding Pensions
"The good news is that more and more Americans are starting to save for retirement," Steve Judge said in a press release issued on March 14th. Mr. Judge is the Securities Industry Association's senior vice president, government affairs. He quickly added that "the bad news is that they aren't accumulating as much as they will need to   retire comfortably."
